DAY 31: LARGEST GROUP TO STAY THE NIGHT (at least 15 people) WHAT: PRESS CONFERENCE WHERE: CAPITOL ROTUNDA (Just Outside Governor’s Office) WHEN: THURSDAY (TODAY), July 21st, 11am Over a dozen disability and aging rights advocates meet in the Tennessee capitol Thursday July 21st and will stay the night to present to Governor Bredesen with yet another option to help save TennCare. Unfortunately Tennessee is still perpetuating an institutional bias towards people with disabilities and our aging populations. It is time to turn this great state around. The concept of a state Money Follows the Person would not only provide freedoms and choices for those that need daily supports but also save the state millions, just another way to help save TennCare. A state Money Follows the Person concept would allow an individual that qualifies for or is already in a nursing home to choose where they receive the assistance/supports that individual needs. If the person chooses to receive those services outside of the nursing home the money comes out of the nursing home budget and “follows the Person” into the home and community based services budget. Providing choice is not only the right thing to do, it could save the state MILLIONS. Combine with a state Money Follows the Person a change to the Nurse Practice Act to allow for nurse delegation would save the state even more money. Nurse delegation would allow a nurse to delegate specific “nursing duties” to an attendant/assistant. Many of these nursing duties such as; opening a prescription bottle, bowel/bladder care etc can and in many other states are provided by someone other then a nurse. This “delegation” of duties saves a tremendous amount of money for the state. There are over 6,000 individuals in nursing homes, in Tennessee that have used their voice to say they want out yet the state continues to pay to keep them segregated from their communities. Money follows the person and nurse delegation would secure the freedom to choose were and how one lives and save the state money which could be used to SAVE TennCare. |
