Partners Accessing Life
Partners Accessing Life (PALs) addresses the need for children and young adults with disabilities to develop supportive relationships. Adults with disabilities are role models for the youth. When possible one to one partnerships of adult and a young partner with same or similar disabilities are made. Group support also provides a means of group identity for the young adults and children involved in learning, and recreational activities. A support group is also available to parents or care givers of the children and young adults. Parents or care givers share and receive information, express concerns, and encouragement. "Fun days" provide recreational opportunities to the families as well as the young family member. Any youth or young adults (from age 6 to 22) who has the cognitive and emotional ability to interact in a group setting may apply for the program. Groups are divided among chronological ages: PALs: 6-11, Pals II: 16-22, and PALs III 12-16.
Youth in Preparation for Independence (PALs II & III), is designed to bring together youth with disabilities to share important concerns about day-to-day issues and coping strategies. Growth and change during adolescence is often accompanied by insecurity and apprehension. This exciting but stressful period is heightened when a youth has a disability.
PALsII encourages personal development, independence and full participation in the community. PALsII provides a series of educational and networking sessions where the youth can explore many lifestyle options available, learn about resources and develop skills to assist them in becoming as independent as possible. Through the use of discussions, hands-on activities, field trips and guest speakers, PALs II participants will explore ideas within the group. Many issues such as dating, peer relationships, getting along with parents, career planning, self-advocacy, and transportation options will be addressed.
PALsIII provides a structured one hour session each week, as well as, interaction time. The sessions will include developing self image, talents and abilities, responsibility and independence. Through the use of discussions, hands-on activities, field trips and guest speakers, PALsIII participants will explore ideas within the group. Many issues such as social interaction, peer relationships, getting along with parents, and communication issues will be addressed. PALsIII Parents will have input in parent group meetings held the same time as youth meetings. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?Any youth between the ages of 12 and 16 who possesses the cognitive and emotional ability to interact in a sharing group can apply to participate in the PALs III Program. No fees are charged to participate; however, group size is limited to 12-15 people.
