FEDERAL PROBE OF MATAplus BEGINNING
MEMPHIS - On February 14, federal officials will launch a probe into whether the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) paratransit system violates the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A finding that the paratransit system violates ADA could lead to widespread reform to MATA and substantial financial penalties for the transit authority.
A 158 page ADA complaint filed and pursued since 1997 by Tennessee Protection and Advocacy (TPA) alleges that MATA has for years violated the accessibility mandates of the ADA and has sparked the Federal Transit Administration to hire Multisystems, Inc., of Cambridge, MA to conduct this probe. The probe will focus on current problems plaguing MATAplus in these key areas: trip denials, eligibility, timeliness of pickups and drop-offs, length of on-board travel times, and adequacy of MATA telephone system capacity.
Interested consumers and disability rights organizations wishing to educate Multisystems about current problems plaguing MATAplus should this week be sure to describe those problems to:
