Shep Wilbun takes the
Challenge to Mayoral candidates

The Commercial Appeal reported on Oct. 5, that Memphis mayoral candidate Joe Ford made a commitment to integrate curb ramps into the repaving of streets, complete the curb ramp transition plan in 5 years, and revamp the Advisory Council for Citizens with Disabilities. The Barrier Free Memphis Society is challenging all candidates to demonstrate their commitment to the civil rights of citizens with disabilities.

Shep Wilbun is the only Memphis candidate that took the challenge on the eve of the election. Mr. Wilbun agreed to:

  1. Appoint a certified paratransit customer to the MATA Board of Commissioners.

  2. Adhere to Kinney v. Yerusalem (1993). Set aside a portion of rehab and repaving funding to improve accessibility of city walkways.

  3. Produce a "Transition Plan" that complies with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

  4. Involve people with disabilities in city government and the ADA compliance process.

  5. Give notice that the City of Memphis is committed to the civil rights protections of the ADA.
