Barrier Free Memphis Society
1999 Mayoral Candidate Forum

(Memphis, July 12) The Barrier Free Memphis Society will host a Mayoral Forum that will focus on how the City of Memphis will comply with the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The forum will be at the Memphis Center for Independent Living, starting at 3:00 p.m. and facilitated by the President of BFMS, Ms. Betty Anderson.

Each candidate will be asked how they will comply with a section of the ADA which requires heads of public entities to notify people of the protections against discrimination assured by the federal law. Members of BFMS will ask questions relating to access issues around Memphis.

In January of 1998 BFMS brought to the attention of the City Attorney the compliance problems of Memphis especially concerning curb ramps. The city was to complete a self-evaluation and have in place a plan to provide access in public buildings and on city sidewalks by 1993. Although BFMS voted curb ramps their top priority access problem the group chose not to sue the city.

In August of 1998, however, six Memphians did sue the city just as Barbara Sonnenburg of the City Council had warned in January of 1995. On July 26, 1999 at 6 p.m. the City of Memphis will hold a public hearing on the purposed curb policy as a result of that lawsuit.

Dr. George Flinn, Mary Rose McCormick, Ralph McGhee and Jack McNeil have confirmed to be at the forum. Pete Sisson, Ernest Lunati, Joe Ford and Mayor Herenton all expressed interest, but could not confirm attendance.

The Memphis Center for Independent Living is a 1633 Madison Avenue .
