Sam's Nephews

by Judy Neal

Uncle Sam has two nephews with disabilities and he agrees to give them each 100 dollars.

Bill lives in his own home.

John lives in a nursing home.

With the money from Uncle Sam:

Bill pays $10 for rent, $10 for utilities, $10 for food, $10 for transportation, and $10 for medical services. He uses $10 for social and community events, pays $10 to his personal assistant, and $10 for housekeeping services. This leaves Bill with $10 for miscellaneous expenses like clothing, repairs, donations and gifts. He puts the remaining $10 into a savings account.

Thanks to Uncle Sam's gift, Bill is able to go to his job and earn money everyday. Bill continues to contribute tho his community through his landlord, utility company, local grocer, public transportation, and medical services. He is the part-time employer of two people. He contributes through items produced at his job and sold at local stores. At the end of every day, Bill gives back $20 to his Uncle Sam.

With the money from Uncle Sam:

John is told he must hand it over to the Nursing Home administrator. The administrator uses $30 for John's daily care, gives John $1 for spending money, and pockets the rest. Then, after an aide dresses him in clothes he wasn't allowed to choose and feeds him a breakfast of bland oatmeal and dry toast, John goes to the TV room to watch game shows. At the end of the day, he goes back to his dreary room. The next morning, he asks his Uncle Sam for another 100 dollars.
