MATA Yields

The single greatest shortcoming at MATAplus is the lack of a commitment to quality. The absence of leadership, a failure to participate, and an inability to determine where it is and where it is going limits MATAplus' ability to provide the disabled community in Memphis with a service that is safe, reliable, customer-oriented, and cost effective.

MATA Provides the Summary Report

Last week the President and General Manager of MATA flatly refused to provide us with the report of the independent consultant as he had promised. But Monday morning after being served with a Freedom of Information Act Request Mr. William Hudson had changed his mind.

The report says what we thought it did. It is not a collection of driver and dispatcher errors that result in the poor performance of MATAplus, but pathetic administration and inadequate management.

More money has helped to get the tools for a quality paratransit system in Memphis, now we must have some effective and strong leadership to direct the system toward success.

NationsBank Accessible?

The State of Tennessee issues non-driver ID cards, for years NationsBank has put people with disabilities at a disadvantage by not accepting them as the equivalent of a driver's license. You may recall that MCIL worked with First Tennessee Bank to end this discriminatory practice at their bank.

Now, about 8 months after we brought this issue to the attention of NationsBank and the Department of Justice, the bank has changed their discriminatory policy. A letter from the mediation attorney and signed by Fred Hannon of NationsBank states that "...NationsBank agrees with Mr. Wheat. The practice of denying services to persons without a valid driver's license when equivalent ID cards are proffered has ceased."

The ADA does work for equality for people with disabilities. It may not work as fast as we would like, but each victory today will lead to equality and acceptance tomorrow.
