Paratransit News:

MATA has been overstating the number of rides they provide. Allison Burton told the Commercial Appeal a year ago the number was 500. Last month, she told the City Council that number was 500 to 600.

The real number is about 350. MATA reported to the board the number of trips made for the last half of 1997 by MATAplus was 57,286. That means the daily average for those six months was 311.3. Assuming no trips were made on the weekend, the number is still UNDER 500.

We do not doubt that someday the trips per day are over 500. However, that is not a daily average, the true daily average 311. We will get some real figures from MATA soon.

Title II news:

All government buildings were to be accessible by Jan. 26, 1995. No surprise that Memphis has failed to meet this deadline.

I feel that the real tragedy is that citizens have not had the opportunity to be involved in the planning as the ADA requires.

So the city drags along, without the input from its citizens. Do they ask for our advise and assistance? NO. They only want complaints. "The Squeaky Wheel gets the Grease." Call MCIL 726-6404 Today to be a part of making Memphis accessible.
