Happy new year in independent living
First, let us all celebrate the victory we won a year ago at the rally at the Supreme Court (on Elvis' birthday). January 8, 1997 will be remembered in the lore of those opposing physician assisted suicide for years to come. But we still have a long way to go. Not Dead Yet must still convince people that physician assisted-suicide is a civil rights issue, not an issue of personal liberty. Read the Amicus brief that Steve Gold and Diane Coleman wrote. It is the only brief quoted by the Court in its decision.
RAMP It Up! is off to a very slow start. Although there is great demand for ramps, there is no insurance on the volunteers to build the ramps. The thing about ramps is that everyone needs a ramp today. Unfortunately, we can't build the ramps on demand and now we are asking people to wait even longer.
However, we have completed 3 projects to date and RAMP It Up! has the potential to assist many Memphians in living independently.
ADAPT has a critical message to all Americans this year. Memphis will be highlighted by civil rights advocates calling for the passage of HR 2020. People with disabilities need to band together to fight the discrimination and inhumane treatment of nursing homes. Join in with ADAPT and show your support for MiCASA.
The Barrier Free Memphis Society will meet Jan. 12 at 2pm at MCIL. William Hudson will be back to address more problems with MATAplus. We also need to work on what we will present to the Memphis City Council concerning parking, curbs and transportation.
