Dawn Russell of the Memphis Center for Independent Living and ADAPT will be talking with the Secretary of HUD, Andrew Cuomo, this Feb. 13.

  1. Where is the affordable accessible housing?
  2. Why doesn't HUD enforce accessibility guidelines?
  3. Why does HUD continue to give nursing homes easy access to loans while people with disabilities can get nothing?

The MiCASA support list is growing. This historic legislation needs your help. Mike Auberger of ADAPT compared MiCASA to the legislative fight for the ADA. Call Tim Wheat at MCIL for some up-to-date information. Or check it out on the web.

ADAPT meets at 6pm on Feb. 2. A lot will be on our agenda. This is an important meeting for helping MiCASA and the movement.

The Feb. 2, 1998 Barrier Free Memphis Society meeting will feature Mr. John Covey of the City Engineers. The main focus will be on curb cuts and Memphis. The meeting will be at 3pm in the MCIL conference room.

Congratulations to those Not Dead Yet! demonstrators that stood their ground to oppose the secret agenda of the Hemlock Society. Faye Girsh, the executive director of Hemlock U.S.A., was caught and confronted about lies that she published in a press release regarding involuntary euthanasia.

10 people where arrested in the national office of the Hemlock Society demanding that Ms. Grish tell the truth about the goals of the Hemlock Society. Involuntary euthanasia, killing someone without their consent, was supported by a Dec. 1997 press release written by Ms. Girsh. In the past the Hemlock Society has said it only supports voluntary euthanasia, misleading members and the public concerning the true objectives of the group.

The President did not have anything for people with disabilities in the State of the Union address. Sure he talked abouts "cures," but he left out the inititive that he had said would be a "high priority" for the administration: Attendant Care.
