| "Don't Tread on the ADA." | Disability rights activists in Birmingham today reversed the refrain made famous by Alabama Governor George Wallace to echo Americans support for the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
ADA today Bill Pryor the Alabama Attorney General has pushed a new segregation dogma to the U.S. Supreme Court in Alabama v. Garrett. ADAPT, a disability rights group, is sponsoring the Rolling Freedom Express to highlight the need for integration of persons with disabilities in state and local programs, especially providing choice in long-term care services. Citizens from all over Alabama gathered in the shadow of the 16th Street Baptist Church to send the Rolling Freedom Express on its seven state tour ending at the U.S. Supreme Court. "I was just saying to Milton [Ash] that I had thought we were alone," said Patricia Garrett to the crowd of 250 supports. Patricia Garrett and Milton Ash are the original plaintiffs in Alabama v. Garrett. "Please know that we here in Birmingham are with you," said Mayor Bernard Kincaid who welcomed the Rolling Freedom Express to the city. "And we wish to send a message with you to Washington: Don't Tread on the ADA." "The history of the Civil Rights Movement started here in Alabama," said Jimmy Peterson, the President of the Alabama Association of the Deaf. "The state of Alabama is repeating history."
