ADA Torch Relay is coming to Memphis

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) has planned a 24-city, Olympic-style torch relay to take place from June 11 to August 7.

The Spirit of ADA Torch Relay is to inform, educate and reach out to people with disabilities and their communities about the significance of the ADA. The AAPD challenges Americans to "Renew the Pledge" the country made in 1990 to eliminate the barriers that limit opportunities and access to people with disabilities.

President George Bush lit the initial torch in Houston that was combined with the flame from the Martin Luther King Jr. torch in Atlanta. That flame will pass through 24 cities this summer, including Memphis on July 11.

"Doing things for ourselves," is the theme of the Memphis segment of the relay. Memphis Coordinator of the relay, Judy Neal explains that Memphis chose this as the theme to emphasis the significance of independent living, and because of the success of pro se litigants in Memphis enforcing the ADA.

"The original theme was freedom through litigation," said Ms. Neal, "but here in Memphis the only examples of successful enforcement have come from people with disabilities bringing suite in federal court without attorneys."
