MATAplus discriminates with misinformation

Many riders have been put off or down-right lied to about the service times and areas of MATA. This misinformation is insulting and, we believe, discrimination. If a MATA agent has given you false information or has made up a questionable excuse why you cannot have a ride, join the other Memphians that call to correct the problems.

You can call both the MATA complaint line at 522-9175

and the Federal Transportation Association at 1 (888) 446-4511

Arthur Andrew Lopez
FTA Office of Civil Rights
400 7th ST., Room 7412
Washington, DC 20590

Dear Mr. Lopez,

I am writing in support of the complaint of Ms. Frances Uttilla concerning discrimination of the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA).

Ms. Uttilla was denied service by a MATA paratransit reservation agent. The MATA agent told her that her destination was outside the service area at the time she requested. Consulting a map of Memphis, it is easy to determine that Ms. Uttilla's request is clearly within the service area of both bus routes 50 and 52. Other paratransit riders made similar requests and were provided service. Mr. Melvin Douglas confirmed his reservation with the same agent that denied service to Ms. Uttilla.

The Memphis Center for Independent Living is concerned that the reservation agents at MATA are using misinformation as an artificial capacity constraint. Ms. Judy Neal made a similar written complaint concerning misinformation given by a reservation agent. I have enclosed a photocopy of that complaint, along with MATA's response. MATA failed to investigate or respond to Ms. Neal as they promised.

In addition to compensating Ms. Uttilla somehow for the incident of discrimination she has witnessed, we hope that the FTA Office of Civil Rights could:

  1. Suggest an enforceable method to assure citizens of Memphis that improper information will not continue to be used to deny rides.

  2. Demand that MATA take complaints seriously, investigate complaints, and respond promptly to complaints.

Sincerely,

Tim Wheat
