MATAplus ridership dwindles
The final 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit Report written by MATA declared that MATAplus ridership would increase to 4,200 in 1997. This year MATA does not seem to care where 3230 of their riders have gone.
Since 1996 MATA has not had to report on ADA compliance of the paratransit service MATAplus. Because MATAplus service does not recover its costs in fares and is more expensive to operate than the fixed-route, MATA has an incentive to keep ridership low. They estimated that more than twenty-two thousand people in the Memphis area could ride MATAplus back in 1992, but only 970 are certified to use paratransit today.
MATA combines poor, undependable, and offensive service with incompetent management to keep ridership low. The Federal Transit Authority Office of Civil Rights wants first-hand accounts to indicate how MATA violates the ADA. We need your help to obtain better transportation from MATA.
