What is a Ramp Barrier?

A ramp barrier is the 2-inch lip on the side of a ramp to keep the wheels of a wheelchair from slipping off. Federal law requires Ramp Barriers on all public transportation vehicles.

Ramp barriers. Each side of the ramp shall have barriers at least 2 inches high to prevent mobility aid wheels from slipping off [38 CFR § 38.23(c)(4)].

This is the ramp on a MATAplus vehicle. Notice the absence of ramp barriers. PHOTO: MATAplus ramp with no Ramp Barriers
James Anglin and Lawson Albritton inspecting the broken ramp on bus 105. Here is the Senior Manager of MATAplus, and the Director of Marketing of MATA looking at the ramp with no ramp barriers and proclaiming the bus ready to go make another pick-up.

Although MATA cannot comply with the most basic safety requirements, they are insisting that riders obey an arbitrary "safety policy" that infers riders exit backwards. The MATA BACKWARDS Policy is infuriating to riders who have seen MATA's lack of concern for safety for years. Suddenly, MATA operators are enforcing a policy that MATA executives admit they don't know where it came from.

Read more about the MATA BACKWARDS POLICY in the Feb. 4, 2000 MCIL Journal.
