DAY FIFTY-EIGHT: East Tennessee HIV/AIDS resources

  • Child & Family Tennessee Project Care: Andy Howe, 865-524-7483, ext. 272; 800-445-6538. Provides case management, education and supportive services to HIV-positive people in Knox, Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier and Union counties.
  • Frontier Health/HOPE for Tennessee: Kingsport; 423-224-1310. Provides support groups, crisis intervention, financial assistance, substance abuse, employment, education/prevention, transportation, clinical/therapy groups, individual counseling, food vouchers, nutritional supplements, mental health services and case management.
  • Helen Ross McNabb Center HIV/AIDS Outreach: 865-541-6943. Provides Street Team outreach, prevention education, personal risk assessment, referral to services. Affiliated with Balm in Gilead, a faith-based HIV/AIDS initiative in black churches.
  • Hispanic Ministry for the Catholic Diocese of Knoxville: Jeannine de la Torre Ugarte, 865-637-4769.
  • HIV/AIDS Center of Excellence: Knox County Health Department, 140 Dameron Avenue, Room 136; 865-215-5080; www.knoxcounty.org/health/centersofexcellence.php. Provides health assessment, medical care, counseling, information and referrals to HIV-positive adults who are on TennCare, in the Knox County Indigent Care Program or Ryan White eligible.
  • HIV/AIDS Center of Excellence, ETSU: Internal Medicine Department, Division of Infectious Diseases, East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine, Johnson City; 423-439-6380.
  • The Hope Center: Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, 1901 Clinch Ave.; 865-541-3767; www.fsregional.com/hope_center/fsrmc-hc-home.cfm. Provides support for HIV-positive people and their families/friends; prevention; education; referrals.
  • Knoxville Cares: Jeff Simmons, 865-523-2620; http://knoxvillecares.tripod.com/. Seeks to unify the gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, HIV-positive and supportive community to be more effective and efficient in education, prevention and support. Meets 6 p.m. first Wednesday of each month.
  • P-Flag: Support group for parents and friends of Lesbians and Gays.
  • Samaritan Ministry: Central Baptist Church of Bearden, 6300 Deane Hill Drive; 865-450-1000, ext. 827; www.samaritancentral.org. Support group, education/prevention outreach, other services.
  • Tennessee Association of People with AIDS: . Made up of local concerned people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS; provides education, outreach, advocacy.
  • Tennessee Department of Health AIDS Support Service: 800-525-AIDS (2437); www2.state.tn.us/health/STD/community_planning.htm. Provides information about client referrals, medical care, support groups and related issues.

  • Tennessee H+H: Bob Lilly, 865-687-0846. Support/prevention group geared toward HIV-positive heterosexuals (though anyone is welcome).
