ADA in progress
Last Friday, a woman called with a concern with the Mid-South Coliseum here in Memphis. While the venue seats 9000, she found that it was "sold-out" only for people with mobility impairments.
I called the SEDBTAC to make sure my understanding of the existing facility was correct, and then called the City of Memphis ADA Coordination Team with the problem. The city sent an architect to look at the seating in the arena, and he developed a quick plan to add eight more accessible seats.
Currently, the Mid-South Coliseum has about 18-27 accessible seats depending on the type of performance. The City of Memphis, knowledgeable of the problem, has promised to expand the accessible seating to 97. They have not provided us with a time for that yet.
The woman who notified the coliseum of the problem was able to use one of the "quick-fix" seats. However, the City of Memphis still has much to do to fully comply with the spirit of the ADA.
