Mitzvah Day 2001

A wooden wheelchair access ramp is provided by the dedication of volunteers

For the fourth year, the Memphis Center for Independent Living has partnered with Temple Israel to build a wooden wheelchair ramp for a Memphis citizen.  As a Mitzvah Day project, MCIL directed volunteers to an individual in need of a ramp.

Volunteers build a solid rail for safety and access

Volunteers donated an entire day of hard work for the project.  Beginning with a pile of lumber, volunteers skillfully created a gently sloping surface that will allow easy access to and from the house.

The ramp also includes a handrail the entire length and a safety rail just above the surface.

Volunteers did not only work with lumber, the project also required a considerable amount of digging.  To make the ramp smoothly meet the driveway surface, the end of the ramp was buried in the ground.

Volunteers learned new skills

Digging, cutting and nailing went on for about seven hours with only one break when an ice cream truck came by the project. Volunteers demonstrated great dedication, not only to get the job done, but also to finish a high quality ramp.
